Urban Design took part in the invited competition for a new combined heat and power plant in Uppsala. The proposal has three main motifs: the silhouette, the family and the interspace. The power plant transforms Uppsala’s silhouette and reaches towards the sky above the horizon. It stands firmly on the ground and gradually lightens as it rises. The main functions are each given their own individual building volume and together form a family of forms. This means that each can be flexibly adapted to the equipment it is to house without altering the whole. The buildings are separated by an interspace that breaks up the volume and creates views through.
