WTE stands for Waste to Energy, meaning waste is burned for electricity and district heating instead of being landfilled and releasing pollutants into the landscape. The building was named Beetle, after the beetle-like shell of varying density that wraps the plant. The shell is made of aluminium and glass, and its density varies according to what lies behind it — opening where daylight is needed and closing around the heavier parts of the process.
