Are affordable homes in Sweden a utopia?

Several European cities run social-housing programmes for mixed, high-quality districts. What would it take in Sweden?

In several major European cities there are social-housing programmes aimed at giving everyone the chance to find a home at a reasonable cost, at creating socio-economically mixed districts, and at building with high quality — in housing, architecture and the urban environment alike.

The Swedish housing market is largely shaped by speculation about price trends, banks' interest rates and the construction cycle. At the same time there is a housing shortage — above all among groups without starting capital and without the ability to borrow. Several cities are marked by segregation and large, socially vulnerable areas. The question is how architecture and city-building can contribute to a more accessible housing market.
